Proton VPN has opened four new physical servers in Brussels, Belgium. It now provides locations in 29 countries across six continents, with 297 servers split amongst them.

Belgium joins nine other Western European locations currently provided by ProtonVPN, and should help ease server load for users connecting to the region.

On why it has chosen Belgium as its latest location for expansion, Proton VPN said: “Belgium has taken cybersecurity and privacy very seriously.

“We at ProtonVPN salute these efforts and hope Belgians will heed the advice of their own Authority for Data Protection and use a VPN to secure their Internet connection!

“Also, now that these servers are online, Belgians with a paid account can browse the Internet with a Belgian IP address. This means that no matter where in the world they are, Belgians can avoid geo-blocking and access their favorite websites.”

Belgium is privilege to a very free internet, with censorship only affecting websites known to facilitate illegal torrents.

In August ProtonVPN polled its users on where they would most like to see a new server established. ProtonVPN promised to open servers in two new countries per month, and has now worked its way down to 12th-placed Belgium.

One of the servers, ‘BE #1’, will be available to users on the ‘Basic’ plan, with the remaining three being exclusively for members on either the ‘Plus’ or ‘Visionary’ plans. All three of those plans are paid-for, costing $5, $10 and $30 per month respectively.

This addition won’t affect free users, who will still have access to just three locations: Japan, the Netherlands and the US.

It’s certainly not cheap and, even after this expansion, still doesn’t have as many servers as some of its rivals, but it’s still a very quick VPN with some excellent features.
