Simple budget VPN offering access to Netflix and secure torrenting.

What we like
  • Really fast local speeds
  • Optimized servers for Netflix
  • User-friendly Windows app
  • Connect securely to 35 countries
  • Zero-logs policy

A secure, no-frills provider, FrootVPN offers a reliable VPN service for a very reasonable price.

It’s by no means the quickest we’ve seen but you can expect consistently good speeds along with access to Netflix and no torrenting restrictions.

A zero-logs policy combined with solid encryption and no DNS leaks makes it a great choice for those seeking the highest levels of privacy, even if non-Windows devices require manual setup.

Pricing & Deals

There are three different pricing plans available if you sign up to FrootVPN – one month, three months, and one year. The longer you sign up for, the bigger the discount you get, even though each plan offers exactly the same features.

A single month is the most expensive (but still very reasonable) at $4.99 per month, but you can reduce this by 40% if you opt for the 12-month plan, bringing the monthly cost down to just $2.99. The three-month plan comes in at $3.99 each month – a reduction of 20%.

Get FrootVPN30-day money-back guarantee

The money-back guarantee is a lot stingier than we’d like, though. It’s 30 days but only valid “if the user had reasonable expectations on the service which FrootVPN.com was not able to fulfill”. This is a far cry from the “no questions asked” guarantees offered by some of its rivals.

Payment & Refund Options

There are loads of different ways to pay for FrootVPN. As well as the usual methods such as via credit card or PayPal, you can also use a ton of different cryptocurrencies. This includes Bitcoin, Dash, Litecoin, Monero, Ripple, and loads more.

Speed & Reliability

With the exception of a couple of long-distance servers, FrootVPN really is quite quick.

Downloads peaked at 74Mbps in the UK (we test from London) and averaged around 65Mbps across the rest of Europe. It’s fast connecting out to the US too, coming in at 44Mbps – one of the best speeds we’ve seen from a budget provider.

Latency was variable but overall fairly snappy, and uploads (barring Australia and Canada) were just as impressive as downloads at around 75Mbps locally.

It’s not going to be breaking speed records any time soon, but FrootVPN will most likely do the job no matter what you’re doing online.

It may not offer the most comprehensive coverage on the VPN market, but FrootVPN’s server network is certainly diverse enough to satisfy most users.

Those located in the US and Europe have the most choice, as is usually the case, but there’s also a handful of options in South America and Asia. These include countries not usually found in a network of this size, such as Costa Rica, Panama, Malaysia, and South Korea.

It’s great to see city-level choice in several countries, too. There are six state-specific locations available in the US and two different cities in Brazil, Canada, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the UK.

The only continent currently without any servers is Africa, so if you’re located there you’ll want to look elsewhere.

Platforms & Devices

We were really disappointed to find that FrootVPN only currently offers a custom app for Microsoft Windows devices.

That’s not to say it can’t be used with loads of other platforms, though. With some manual configuration to work with your chosen protocol, you can install it on pretty much any device you want, including routers.

Games Consoles & Streaming Devices

If you decide to install FrootVPN at router level, this means you’ll protect all internet-connected devices in your home, including games consoles and streaming devices such as the Amazon Fire Stick.

There are no native apps for these kinds of devices, though, so if you’re looking for a plug and play solution you’re out of luck. Our top pick ExpressVPN offers a far more reliable way of streaming and gaming securely without router installation.

Streaming & Torrenting

FrootVPN offers several servers optimized for streaming content from popular sites such as Netflix and BBC iPlayer, but these don’t guarantee access by any means.

In our most recent tests we were able to unblock Netflix on the dedicated US East and West servers, and excellent speeds mean you’ll have no problem streaming in HD. It wasn’t the same story for iPlayer, though, which was blocked on FrootVPN’s dedicated server – you can find our top recommendations for the service here.

The good news for torrenters, however, is that P2P activity is permitted on all of FrootVPN’s servers. Excellent speeds and a strict zero-logs policy mean speedy, secure file sharing, too.

Encryption & Security

FrootVPN is a secure provider that we’d wholeheartedly trust to protect our personal data. Encryption is via top cipher AES-256 and all of the apps can be used with the gold standard of VPN protocols, OpenVPN.

There aren’t loads of advanced features but there is the all-important kill switch, preventing your true IP address from being leaked should the connection drop for any reason. This is customizable too, allowing you to specify certain websites to bypass the block.

Despite there being no box to tick to protect yourself against DNS and IPv6 leaks, we were very pleased to see absolutely no vulnerabilities in our tests. This means that no matter which server you connect to, your identity and browsing activity will remain private.

Advanced features

    Bypassing Censorship

Despite customer service telling us that FrootVPN will work in China, we’re not completely convinced. Not only does it operate on OpenVPN, the most commonly used protocol, there are also no additional obfuscation tools to hide your VPN connection.

This means that if you were to try and connect out of China it would be incredibly easy for government censors to detect and block your traffic. If you’re looking for a more reliable VPN for the country, we’d recommend Astrill.

    Privacy

    Logging Policy

FrootVPN is a zero-logs provider, not even collecting any sort of connection metadata such as timestamps or bandwidth consumed. This means that nothing you do while connected to the VPN can be traced back to you as an individual – exactly how it should be.

    Jurisdiction

Jurisdiction in the privacy-friendly Seychelles is another major plus point for FrootVPN, as this makes it free from any intelligence-sharing agreements with other nations. There are also no laws requiring VPN providers to collect or store any user data, ensuring your confidential information remains private.

    Ease of Use

The custom app for Windows isn’t the most stylish we’ve seen, but in this case simplicity does the trick. There’s no separate homepage, just the server list which is organized alphabetically and allows you to star your favorite locations so you can find them easily later.

The quick connect feature is useful, allowing you to select a country along with your chosen VPN protocol to prevent you from scrolling through the full server list. The settings are fairly limited but we like that you can personalize the kill switch feature.

    Getting Started

If you’re using FrootVPN on Windows, it’s as simple as downloading the app from the website and you’re up and running. For those planning on using it on other platforms, the setup takes a little more time.

The installation guides on the website walk you step-by-step through the process for each device, most of which involve downloading a third-party software (such as OpenVPN) and importing FrootVPN’s config files. While this is simple, it can be fiddly, so maybe not the best choice for beginners.

    Customer Support

FrootVPN’s support could do with a bit of organization but the resources themselves are actually pretty good. There are detailed installation guides and FAQs covering the most common problems, but annoyingly a few of the links lead to pages that no longer exist (they’re still accessible in other ways, though).

We were really impressed when we saw the live chat feature on the website but it wasn’t available when we tried to use it – it’s not actually stated anywhere whether or not there are set hours during which agents will be available to help you.

We did get a response after around 12 hours but didn’t receive email confirmation, so it took us a while before we saw it.

    The Bottom Line

    What we like
    • Quick, reliable local speeds
    • Dedicated servers for Netflix
    • Connect securely to 35 countries
    • Simple app for Windows
    • Strict zero-logs policy
    What we like less
    • Other platforms require manual setup
    • Limited customer support
    • Lacks advanced features

FrootVPN provides all the VPN essentials at a great price, even if it does lack some of the more advanced features we see from its rival providers.

If you’re looking for fast speeds and access to Netflix along with a zero-logs policy, look no further. FrootVPN users also benefit from the highest possible level of encryption and peace of mind that their true IP address will always be protected.

True, it’ll require some manual configuration if you’re not using it on Windows, and the customer service could do with some improvement, but overall it’s not a bad choice by any means.
