“A speedy VPN that's very easy to use and covers basic privacy needs well enough”
Great server performance for buffer-free streaming of big sporting events
High quality mobile app is perfect for connecting on the move
Manual protocol options plus server performance even over distance
SaferVPN is a US-based VPN service that stands out as being one of the very few providers to offer a proper free trial (one-day only but with access to full features) as well as a money-back guarantee. SaferVPN also offers a Chrome extension that complements its client software plus a refer-a-friend scheme that earns you and each friend a free month of VPN access.
The SaferVPN apps are really nicely-designed, easy-to-use and offer excellent performance. Server selection is a bit limited but covers most popular locations.
SaferVPN offers very fast download speeds across the majority of its servers with impressively low latency, which means you can expect snappy performance on even the most demanding websites and apps. Upload speeds are some of the fastest we have seen, making this a great choice for gamers or file-sharers.
The only downsides were a surprisingly average download speed for its US servers, however this was still more than enough for high-definition video. Average connection time was also super low at around 2s on average.

SaferVPN has most popular server locations covered but at only 30 locations, it has one of the narrowest choices on the market. Asia is particularly poorly served with only Singapore, Japan, Thailand and Hong Kong on offer while South America’s sole offering is Brazil.
Do not expect city-level server choice, while the US only has two options: east and west. Good server performance even over distance however does make up for lack of choice somewhat so as long as the specific locations you need are covered, there’s no need to be put off.
Customer support is quick and helpful. Livechat responses are snappy and friendly, while email responses are typically within a couple of hours. Trustpilot reviews of customer service are very positive across a solid number of submissions. The online knowledge base covers the basics well enough of installation, manual configuration and troubleshooting well enough but we would have liked to have seen a bit more depth and detail to earn a top score.
SaferVPN has a simple but nicely designed app, which is pleasant to use. Everything happens in one window on desktop and everything feels slick and responsive. It’s easy to search for server locations and mark them as favourites for later. Selecting VPN protocols couldn’t be more straightforward with a simple dropdown in the settings that contains each protocol. There is also an automatic mode if you don’t have a preference.
Basic connection info, including your new IP address and connection protocol, is visible in your main view. And that is basically it. There are no advanced settings whatsoever on the desktop. While this certainly makes the SaferVPN super easy to use, more advanced users may be left wanting.
The mobile app is similarly slick and modern-looking, however it lacks any kind of manual protocol selection (LT2P over IPSec is the only native protocol included with the app, although OpenVPN and PPTP can be configured manually on iOS/Android plus IKEv2 on iOS only). On the plus side, it does have some additional manual settings for automatic WiFi protection and auto reconnection that can be easily toggled on or off).
SaferVPN will certainly cover your basic privacy needs on public Wi-Fi or to avoid general monitoring and data collection by your ISP. The auto-protection feature of the SaferVPN mobile app is an added bonus here. Where SaferVPN starts to come up short however is should you have more demanding privacy needs. SaferVPN is incorporated in the US, which means it’s within the juridiction of that nation’s authorities. This makes it an absolute no-no for the keen torrenter, for example.
SaferVPN also logs certain details of your VPN sessions and retains them for 12 months, including when you connected and disconnected, how much data you used and the IP address you used to connect along with the IP address of the VPN server to which you connected. While Safer VPN does not log any further info, such as details of the websites you visit or files you download, and states it would only share this information “if we get a subpoena from a court of justice in a criminal case asking to specifically reveal this information”, this is more logging than more privacy-focused users may be comfortable with. Key privacy features such as killswitch or DNS leak blocking are also absent.
