Antonio breaks down his history and relationship with online privacy and why he decided to create Top10VPN.com.
Founder & CEO
I’m Antonio, the founder of Top10VPN. I launched the site in January 2016 because I believed people needed a better way to find VPNs they could actually trust.
I first used a VPN, one called Expat Shield, in around 2008, when I was spending a lot of time abroad. I wanted to stay secure and access the internet more freely, and I was struck by how much this one small piece of software could do.
I was busy with other things at the time, mostly building tools to help people save money online, so I put it to the side and didn’t think much more about it.
That changed in 2015. VPNs were taking off as people became more aware of how much of their online life was being tracked, logged and monetized by ISPs, advertisers and often the apps themselves. Online privacy had come to matter more to me personally, too. So I started paying close attention to the market, and the closer I looked, the worse it got.
There were hundreds of VPN apps out there, many of which were poorly made or outright unsafe. At the same time, a lot of VPN review sites weren’t doing enough to properly test the products they recommended. Consumers were being left to make an important decision based on incomplete or misleading information.
So I started Top10VPN with a simple idea: actually test VPNs, dig into how they work, and give people straightforward advice about which ones are worth using and which ones aren’t.
Since then, I’ve built a team of passionate and knowledgeable people who share that same approach. We’re here to help people use the internet more privately, securely and freely, without having to become VPN experts themselves.
The VPN industry has come a long way since I first discovered it, and the software is now more powerful and flexible than I could have imagined. But the original problem hasn’t gone away. There are still plenty of mediocre, misleading and unsafe VPNs out there.
That’s why our mission hasn’t changed to this day: testing VPNs ourselves so people can make more informed choices.
