The best overall VPN for Android TV is Surfshark, due to its unique mix of an easy-to-use and fully-secure app, excellent streaming performance, and cheap subscription prices.
While there are Android TV apps for every popular streaming service, you’re limited to the content that’s available in your regional library.
To bypass this restriction, you can use a virtual private network (VPN). By connecting to a VPN server in another country, you can trick apps into thinking you’re accessing them from that location and stream geo-blocked content.
The problem is that out of 61 VPNs we tested, only 25 VPNs have a dedicated app for Android TV and of those, only 3 work with every popular streaming app.
Summary: The Best Android TV VPNs
Based on numerous tests on our Sony Android TV, the VPNs below delivered the best experience:
We’re fully independent and have been reviewing VPNs since 2016. Our ratings are based on our own testing results and are unaffected by financial incentives. Learn who we are and how we test VPNs.
Contrary to information elsewhere, these Android TV VPNs are equally compatible and effective on Google TV devices. Google TV is simply a different user interface built on top of Android TV.
Our findings are based on using VPNs on a Sony Android TV and a Hisense Google TV. For Chromecast users, please see our separate recommendations.
Which VPNs Have an App for Android TV?
The most important feature for a VPN on Android TV is the availability of a dedicated app. This allows you to directly download and install the app from Google Play, eliminating the need for complex setups, such as configuring a virtual router.
Our research revealed that surprisingly few VPN services provide a dedicated Google TV app. Notably, less than half of the VPNs we’ve reviewed have one, including popular options such as StrongVPN and VPNArea.

Overall Best Android TV VPNs Analyzed
All three paid VPNs we recommend below provide a dedicated Android TV app for easy setup, have been reliable over a long period for accessing geo-blocked streaming apps, and come with a selection of strong security and privacy features.
You can quickly compare these VPNs in the table below:
Navigating the app requires a lot of remote clicking
Based on our testing, Surfshark is the best VPN for Android TV. It offers a dedicated app that’s simple to use on all Android and Google TV devices (including Sony and TCL TVs), it’s the only option with a VPN kill switch, and it works with every popular streaming site, including 9 Netflix libraries, as well as Disney+ and Max.
Using Surfshark on a Google TV device.
Android TV App
Surfshark provides a dedicated TV app from Google Play, which means you can quickly download it directly onto your device. Logging into the app was easy as we just needed to scan a QR code using our phone. PrivateVPN, IPVanish, and many other VPNs force you to manually enter your account details, which was a pain to do while using a TV remote.
The left half of the screen allows you to quickly choose a VPN server location and the right half shows the connection status. We prefer this to VPN apps, like ExpressVPN, that require you to click through to another screen to change server location.
One downside is that the app requires a lot of scrolling, which was frustrating while using our TV’s remote.
For example, the three options at the top of the screen of ‘Quick-connect’, ‘Fastest location’, and ‘Nearest country’ perform the same function and always connected us to the exact same server. We’d prefer it if two of these three options were removed and that space was used more efficiently.
Streaming
Surfshark consistently unblocked all of the popular streaming services, including US Netflix, Prime Video, Max, and Disney+. It also offers servers in 100 countries, which means you’ll almost certainly be able to get a compatible IP address for the platform you want to access.
However, on some occasions, we did need to connect to a different server to access a streaming service. We wish that the VPN would automatically connect you to a streaming-optimized server, like NordVPN does, rather than making you choose a specific city.
Speed
Surfshark’s performance is disappointing when contrasted against NordVPN and ExpressVPN. We recorded an average download speed loss of 17% when connected to servers in other countries, which is 2Mbps slower than ExpressVPN and 3Mbps slower than NordVPN.
That said, Surfshark was always fast enough to access geo-blocked content on our Google TV device in high resolution without buffering, and should be for you if you have a baseline download speed of above 30Mbps.
Privacy & Security
Surfshark is the only VPN to provide a kill switch on its Android TV app, which put us at ease when using the VPN to stream Kodi add-ons on our Google TV box. We were also able to switch between secure and trusted protocols, like WireGuard with ChaCha20 encryption, and OpenVPN with AES-256 encryption.
Like most other top Google TV VPNs, the app allows you to enable its ad and tracker blocker, as well as set up split tunneling. One frustration we had was that when setting up which apps to exclude from the VPN tunnel, we couldn’t hide system apps. As a result, we had to scroll through hundreds of apps until we could reach YouTube to exclude it.
Pricing & Free Access
Surfshark provides excellent value on a long-term basis, costing just $1.99 per month on a 2-year plan. However, it’s a lot more expensive if you choose to pay monthly, which costs $15.45 per month.
Though it doesn’t offer a permanently free version, the VPN offers a seven-day free trial if you sign up on iOS, Android and Mac, or a 30-day free trial via the service’s 100% money-back guarantee.
Advanced security features & private logging policy
Blocks ads and trackers
Expensive
Lacks a kill switch feature
ExpressVPN is an excellent all-round VPN for Google TV, with better streaming capabilities, connection speeds, and app usability compared to Surfshark. However, its Google TV app doesn’t have a kill switch feature and it’s more expensive than every other VPN in our shortlist.
Using ExpressVPN’s Android TV app.
Android TV App
ExpressVPN’s dedicated app is the most intuitive and easiest to use of all that we tested. It’s available from Google Play, so you won’t have to download an APK file or sideload it.
Previously, we criticized its Android TV app for not being optimized for large screen devices and for not making it clear which UI element was selected at any time. Thankfully, due to an app update in December 2023, most of these concerns have been addressed.
The app is now well-designed and features large buttons and text, which makes it easier to read and navigate on a TV screen. However, there’s no option to use the app in light mode, which we’d like to see added as an option.
We particularly loved the ability to pin shortcuts to streaming apps from the ExpressVPN home screen. This made it easy to quickly jump to the service we wanted to access whenever we changed server location. This is particularly useful for its Android TV app, as the OS doesn’t support a quick-switching app feature.
Streaming
ExpressVPN is the very best VPN you can get for streaming. Our tests found that it’s able to access geo-restricted streaming apps from 106 countries. Using it, we were able to watch content from 18 Netflix libraries, Disney+, Max, ITVX, and many more.
The one frustration we’ve encountered is that ExpressVPN’s default US server location doesn’t work with US Netflix. This was frustrating on Google TV, as whenever an app blocked us from accessing it, we had to clear the cache from the device’s settings and restart the device, which often took as long as five minutes.
Speed
While connected to ExpressVPN servers using its proprietary Lightway protocol, we’ve always recorded speeds fast enough for streaming in the highest resolution. For most streaming apps, you need a download speed of 5Mbps or higher to steam content in Full HD (1080p) or 15Mbps or higher for 4K content.
During our tests, we recorded an average download speed of 85Mbps while connected to servers in different countries, which is just a 15% drop from our baseline speed.
Privacy & Security
ExpressVPN is a highly-secure and private VPN, encrypting all traffic using AES-256. It also has a private logging policy that has been independently audited several times. Its Google TV app also includes a range of technical features, including an ad and malware blocker. However, we were disappointed that unlike its Fire TV app, its Android TV app lacks a kill switch.
Pricing & Free Access
ExpressVPN is one of the most expensive VPNs you can get, costing $12.95 when paying monthly or $4.99 per month when you sign up for 15 months.
You can also sign up for a 7-day free trial if you create an account through its iOS and Android app and then sign in on your Google TV device.
Google TV app is poorly designed compared to competitors
Doesn’t work with Max or Prime Video
No kill switch feature
Account login via TV remote can be cumbersome
Servers in fewer countries than alternatives
IPVanish is an excellent choice for users with Android TV boxes. To access Kodi and IPTV streams safely, the VPN uses secure encryption and protocols and it doesn’t log any data. However, it falls short in accessing some streaming services like UK Netflix and Max.
IPVanish’s Android TV app is darker and less nice to use than alternatives.
Android TV App
IPVanish’s map interface and stark green color scheme is less user-friendly than competitors like Proton VPN. We’d prefer if it looked more like its tvOS app, which features a lighter and simpler interface and doesn’t feature the map element.
That said, we did appreciate that it’s the only VPN app we used with a pure black background, which looked excellent on our Sony OLED. Other VPNs, like NordVPN and ExpressVPN, use a dark gray background instead.
Disappointingly, unlike competitors that simplify the login process using QR codes, IPVanish requires manual entry using the TV remote, which can be time-consuming and frustrating.
From the home screen, you can quickly connect to the nearest server or view other locations by clicking the bottom-left icon. While countries are listed alphabetically, this can delay connection times to popular locations like the US. However, the server favoriting feature can mitigate this issue.
Streaming
IPVanish isn’t as effective as ExpressVPN, Surfshark, or many other top VPNs for bypassing geo-blocks on streaming services. Though it could access US Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and Hulu in our tests, we were blocked from streaming UK Netflix, Prime Video, Max, and Hotstar.
Speed
IPVanish is the second-fastest VPN of all 61 VPNs. On average, we recorded a download speed loss of just 5% while connected to a nearby IPVanish server, and an average download speed loss of 12% when connected to international server locations.
Privacy & Security
IPVanish’s security and privacy performance is superb. On its Google TV app, you have the choice of encrypting traffic using ChaCha20 with WireGuard or AES-256 with OpenVPN, both of which are open-source and safe.
It’s also the only VPN on this list that uses a strict no-logs privacy policy, which has been confirmed by an independent audit. However, unlike the Fire TV version, the Google TV app lacks a kill switch. This means that in the event of a sudden connection drop, there’s a risk of exposing your real IP address, compromising your privacy.
Pricing & Free Access
IPVanish offers competitive pricing, starting at $2.19 per month for a two-year plan, which is on par with industry standards. It offers a 7-day free trial on both Android and iOS, a perk which isn’t offered by many of its competitors.
After searching for 23 free VPNs in Google Play, we were disappointed to find that only 6 have dedicated Android TV apps. These are PrivadoVPN, Proton VPN, Windscribe, Hotspot Shield, Hide.me, and X-VPN.
Of these, PrivadoVPN Free was the only VPN that allowed us to connect to 11 or more countries, access US Netflix, and maintain fast download speeds across every server. You can read more about our experience with PrivadoVPN Free in the section below.
Fails at unblocking YouTube TV, BBC iPlayer & other streaming apps
Logging policy hasn’t been audited
Lack of ad blocker & other advanced features
Doesn’t use diskless VPN servers
Over months of use, PrivadoVPN Free clearly came out as the best free VPN for Android TV. It’s the only completely free option that provides a dedicated app and works with US Netflix. The only major downside is its 10GB monthly data cap, but this should suffice for occasional usage.
PrivadoVPN’s Android TV app is better designed than other free VPNs, like Windscribe & Hide.me.
Android TV App
PrivadoVPN Free is one of only a few completely free VPNs that offers a dedicated app for Google and Android TV devices. The app itself is simple but generally well-designed and easy to use. To save you time having to scroll through the server list, the app allows you to connect to a server by proximity or by favoriting servers.
Similarly to ExpressVPN, you can also add a shortcut to a streaming app from the PrivadoVPN home screen. We added a shortcut to Netflix so we could quickly access the new content library of the app whenever we changed server location.
It also supports split tunneling, which is named ‘Smart Route’ in the app and is difficult to discover. You’ll have to click the two diverging arrows at the top left to access it. Conveniently, there’s a toggle for deciding whether you want this list to include or exclude system apps, which makes scrolling through and selecting the apps a lot easier.
Streaming
PrivadoVPN Free accesses far fewer streaming apps than the other VPNs in this list. Unlike Surfshark, NordVPN, and many other paid options, we could not access BBC iPlayer, ESPN+, or YouTube TV while connected to a PrivadoVPN server.
However, it fares much better than other free VPN services. While PrivadoVPN works reliably with US Netflix, the other VPNs we tested, like Windscribe Free and Proton VPN Free, failed to unblock Netflix on any of their US servers. PrivadoVPN also unblocks Disney+, Max, Prime Video, and Peacock.
The biggest drawback of using PrivadoVPN Free for streaming is its 10GB monthly data cap. While the same is true for Windscribe, Hide.me, and many other top free VPNs, we could only stream approximately 4 hours of video on our Google TV device before using up all of our data allowance.
Speed
Since we started using it after its launch in 2019, PrivadoVPN has remained one of the most reliably quick free VPNs. It’s faster than many of the top free VPNs, with an average international download speed that’s 91Mbps faster than Hide.me Free and 7Mbps faster than TunnelBear Free. While using it on our Sony TV, we didn’t encounter any buffering or low resolution video.
Privacy & Security
For a free VPN, PrivadoVPN is impressively private and secure. The VPN doesn’t log any sensitive user data and it’s based in the privacy-friendly jurisdiction of Switzerland. By contrast, many of the popular free VPNs we encountered in the Google TV Play Store, like X-VPN, log personally-identifiable data.
Unlike all the paid-for VPNs on this page, PrivadoVPN Free doesn’t offer an ad blocker, nor does it have a multi-hop feature or a kill switch on its Google TV app. There’s no getting away from the fact that your internet activity is less secure when using PrivadoVPN Free compared to premium alternatives.
Pricing & Free Access
PrivadoVPN Free is completely free and only requires an email address and password to use. You don’t need to provide any payment details to access it.
We tested 61 VPNs with our Sony Google TV and our Nvidia Shield Android TV box. Only 25 VPNs provided a dedicated app for the platform, and many failed to access popular streaming apps or were too slow to stream in HD.
Below is a selection of popular VPNs we don’t recommend for use on Google TV devices:

How We Tested & Chose the Top VPNs for Android TV
We extensively used all 25 VPNs that have an Android TV app and assessed their performance in several key areas.
You can quickly see our criteria and how much each area contributes to a VPN’s overall Android TV rating in the chart below.
Below, you can read a more detailed explanation of our methodology and ranking system.
1. Android TV App (40%)
Test Conducted: We used each VPN’s Android TV app and documented our experience. This included evaluating ease of access to desired server locations and the presence of additional features, like streaming service shortcuts. We also noted whether each app offered a kill switch and other functional features.
Why It’s Important: A user-friendly VPN app allows for simple and quick setup, even while using a cumbersome TV remote.
Optimal Result: An app that’s available from Google Play, allows you to log in via a QR code, is intuitive and simple to navigate, and includes a kill switch and split tunneling.
Using and evaluating a VPN’s dedicated Android TV app.
2. Streaming (30%)
Test Conducted: We attempted to access 120 streaming services while connected to the VPN’s servers from around the world. These tests are always ongoing to assess the VPN’s reliability.
Why It’s Important: This is essential for accessing geo-blocked streaming content on a TV from anywhere in the world.
Optimal Result: A VPN that consistently unblocks more than 10 Netflix libraries, Disney+, Hulu, Max, BBC iPlayer, and all other popular streaming apps.
Testing whether a VPN can access geo-blocked streaming services, like Peacock.
3. Speed (20%)
Test Conducted: We used our self-hosted speed testing tool to determine the connection speed loss of each VPN while connected to servers in eight countries.
Why It’s Important: Fast speeds are necessary to watch geo-restricted videos in Full HD or 4K without buffering. This factor is particularly significant on Google TV, where technical limitations of the device, such as lower RAM, can influence performance. For example, our Sony Google TV set has only 1GB of RAM, compared to 16GB on our test laptops and 6GB on our test smartphones, leading to slightly reduced speeds.
Optimal Result: A connection speed loss of below 10% across all server locations with the availability of WireGuard or a proprietary VPN protocol.
Testing a VPN’s speed performance.
4. Privacy (10%)
Test Conducted: We read through each VPN’s privacy policy from top to bottom to understand the data they collect and for how long they retain it. We also checked for privacy-enhancing features and performed a series of IP address and DNS leaks.
Why It’s Important: To ensure you don’t sacrifice your online privacy when using a VPN to access streaming apps on Google TV. Many VPNs, especially free ones, log and sell user data to make money.
Optimal Result: A clear no-logs policy that’s been audited and proven in the real-world, alongside encrypted and diskless VPN servers that have a proven track record of safeguarding user data.
Reading through a VPN’s privacy and logging policy.
Data Cap Penalty
We apply the following penalties to the VPN’s overall Google TV rating based on its data cap:
Unlimited bandwidth: No deduction to the overall rating
10GB per month: -20% to the overall rating
500MB per day: -25% to the overall rating
5GB per month: -30% to the overall rating
1GB or 2GB per month: -35% to the overall rating
200MB per day: -40% to the overall rating
500MB per month: -50% to the overall rating
How to Install & Use a VPN on Android TV
As long as the VPN has a dedicated app for Android TV, it’s simple to set it up. Simply search for the VPN’s name in Google Play, install it, log in, and select the server you want to connect to.
Here’s a video demonstrating how easy it is to install a VPN on a Chromecast that’s running Google TV:
We’ve also outlined the steps from the video in the instructions below.
Here are step-by-step instructions for setting up and using a VPN on a Android TV device:
Make sure you have an active subscription to a VPN that offers a dedicated Android TV app: If you don’t, you’ll have to sign up on a desktop or mobile device as you can’t subscribe directly from the Android TV app. Find a full list of VPNs that have native Android TV apps elsewhere in this guide.
Search for the VPN in Google Play: Scroll to the ‘Apps’ tab at the top of the screen and enter the name of the VPN in the field labeled ‘Search for apps and games’. If your device remote has a dedicated Google Assistant button, we found it’s quicker to hold it and say the name of the VPN out loud.
Download the VPN onto your Android TV device: Press the ‘Install’ button and wait for the download to complete. Then, press ‘Open’.
Log in using your account credentials: Many of the best VPNs will allow you to scan a QR code on your mobile device, saving you from having to enter your email and password using the TV remote.
Connect to the VPN server that you want to appear from: For instance, connect to a UK server to access BBC iPlayer. Simply click your remote’s ‘OK’ button when the country is selected.
If required, download the geo-blocked streaming app from Google Play: Contrary to claims elsewhere, changing your IP address is sufficient for downloading apps that are only available in certain countries, like BBC iPlayer. You won’t need to change the country your Google account is linked to.
Start streaming the geo-restricted content: You’ll now have access to previously ‘hidden’ content from streaming services. If your VPN isn’t working, try clearing the app’s cache or restart your device.
What Can You Do with a VPN on Android TV?
1. Download Apps from Other Countries
For us, the most impressive aspect of using a VPN on Android TV is that it allows you to download region-specific apps simply by changing your IP address. On the Play Store on Android, you have to go through the cumbersome process of changing your account region to achieve this.
We downloaded Hotstar India with a US Google account by using a VPN.
For example, we switched to a UK server to download the BBC iPlayer app, followed by an India server to get Hotstar, and so on. Notably, all these apps remained in our app library even after disconnecting from the VPN, unlike on Fire TV where the device only displays apps from your current region.
2. Stream Geo-Restricted Content
Without a VPN, you’ll only be able to access content that’s available in your location. This is because streaming services geo-block content to honor the licensing agreements they have with rights holders.
By changing your IP address using a VPN, you can appear to be in a different location and either access international libraries of streaming apps you already have access to, like Netflix, or access ones that are only available in one or a few countries, like Hotstar.
Accessing the French Netflix library on Google TV using a VPN.
3. Hide Kodi Activity from Your ISP
When using an Android TV box for Kodi, you’re unfortunately likely to encounter Kodi add-ons that host copyrighted content. If you accidentally stream such content on your regular connection, your ISP can monitor your activity and pass it on to law enforcement.
By connecting to a VPN server, you can conceal all your network activity from your ISP. This ensures that your viewing habits on Kodi remain private and unmonitored.
