PrivateVPN Overview

PrivateVPN is a Sweden-based VPN that offers reliable performance on most fronts. Strong privacy features and a strict zero-logs policy make it a great choice for the privacy-conscious, along with the added bonuses of a VPN Killswitch and DNS Leak Protection.

Performance was excellent with high speeds across the network, including the US, Europe, Asia and even Africa and South America. Their network is not the biggest we’ve ever seen but includes a good range of locations and countries are constantly being added. Streaming works incredibly well on all major sites and P2P/torrenting is also permitted.

We loved PrivateVPN’s user-friendly desktop client but their mobile apps leave a lot to be desired. Their customer support can be a little patchy but is on the whole helpful and informative, however we don’t like that they promise a Livechat feature but fail to consistently provide one.

What we like
  • Excellent server speeds
  • Simple, user-friendly app
  • Works with streaming services
What we like less
  • Mobile apps lacking in features
  • Falls under EU data regulations
  • Server network could be bigger

PrivateVPN lives up to its name in regards to privacy features. Their zero-logs approach seemed at first almost too good to be true, but we were reassured by PrivateVPN that they do not even temporarily store any connection metadata. This could become an issue as their user base expands, due to the fact that they have no way of measuring server demand and usage.

We love the Killswitch feature that protects you from exposing your IP address, along with DNS and IPv6 Leak Protection for added peace of mind. The desktop client also offers a range of VPN protocols for you to choose from, but defaults on startup to OpenVPN which is the most secure. PrivateVPN is also torrenting and P2P-friendly, and offers an open port on their service for this purpose.

PrivateVPN also handles DNS requests via its own first-party servers, an added bonus. This does require manual setup but is a very simple process.

Speed & Performance

PrivateVPN’s overall server performance is absolutely excellent across the globe, with blisteringly fast speeds in Europe, Asia and the US. Speeds like these mean you can download multiple files, stream in HD and play your favorite game with no problems at all.

Latency was pleasingly low in the UK, making PrivateVPN a fantastic choice for gamers.

How do we test these VPN speeds?

  • We continuously test the performance of all our featured VPN providers to ensure you have all the latest information you need to choose.
  • For this provider, we use our own proprietary speed test tool to track speeds between servers within each location with traffic directed through the VPN provider.
  • Our tests are intended to give you an idea of the range of connection speeds. The closer the server and faster your connection, the faster your speeds.

PrivateVPN has a mid-sized server network with 69 locations, and it certainly covers the most popular destinations. Their number of servers, however, does not match up to the top-tier providers, which may mean you could experience congestion at busier times.

The US, Europe and Asia Pacific are served well, with city-specific choice in a handful of countries such as Canada, Italy and Sweden. It’s great to see more than one choice in South America too, rather than being limited to just Brazil. We would have liked to see more choice in Africa though, as currently there are only two servers in Egypt and South Africa, but hopefully with time PrivateVPN will address this.

Ease of use

What we like
  • Very user-friendly
  • Advanced privacy settings on desktop
  • Good choice of VPN protocols

What we like less
  • No embedded support on desktop app
  • Lack of server search feature
  • Mobile apps lack privacy options

PrivateVPN’s desktop app is simple and uncluttered, with a functional and informative main screen displaying your connection status, location and IP address. We love that even the more advanced settings are user friendly, with simple on/off toggles for features such as the Killswitch and DNS Leak Protection.

It would have been nice to have a search feature for server locations, but they are arranged alphabetically so it isn’t too much of a chore to scroll through them. It’s also a little annoying that you have to log out of one server in order to log into another one, however with speedy connection times your browsing shouldn’t suffer too much.

One problem is the lack of embedded support on both the desktop and mobile apps. There is a Live Support link but this is misleading, as every time we clicked on it we were told it was unavailable and instead prompted to fill out a support form. This is not ideal as often we only had a small query that could easily have been answered on Livechat or on the FAQs page. However, we have been informed by PrivateVPN that this issue is being resolved by their developer as soon as possible.

PrivateVPN’s mobile apps were very disappointing, as they have been hugely over-simplified to the point where they have no advanced privacy features at all. The iOS app is limited to IKEv2 or IPSec and neither Android nor iOS has a Killswitch or DNS Leak Blocking. They are very sleek and easy to use, but major improvements need to be made to bring them up to speed with the desktop client.

Customer Support

PrivateVPN advertises 24/7 Livechat support, but it is touch and go as to whether this will work when you need it. If it is unavailable, you are prompted to fill in a form on the website and wait for a response. Thankfully their email replies are lightning fast and informative, if a little blunt at times.

The support section of their website also contains lots of useful information, including video tutorials and step-by-step installation guides. It was nice to see set-up guides for devices that are usually overlooked, such as the Amazon Fire Stick and Kodi. Additionally, they offer a remote control service to install or troubleshoot PrivateVPN if you do not feel comfortable doing it yourself.

One of our only issues is that there is no search function, so if you have a problem you are forced to scroll through the FAQs rather than just type in your query, but this is a very minor downside.
