The Best VPNs for France

The best VPN to connect into France and get a French IP address is ExpressVPN, whose server locations in Paris, Marseille, and Strasbourg unblocked every geo-restricted French TV streaming service at high speed and on every device. Windscribe’s free VPN servers in Paris also worked well to access French content platforms from abroad, although free bandwidth is capped at 10GB per month.
There’s nothing more frustrating than trying to watch your favorite show, but realizing it’s unavailable in France.
Even worse, French law imposes a 15-month window between a movie’s theatrical release and when it can be shown on streaming platforms.
Using a VPN lets you change your online location and access your home streaming services, as well as content from around the world.
Add in France’s notoriously insecure public WiFi networks and it’s become a no-brainer to start encrypting your connection.
If you’re outside France and need a French IP address, then the solution is the same: use a VPN.
Summary: The Best VPNs for France
Out of 60 VPNs we tested for France, these five are head-and-shoulders above the rest:
We’re fully independent and have been reviewing VPNs since 2016. Our ratings are based on our own testing results and are unaffected by financial incentives. Learn who we are and how we test VPNs.

Free VPNs can also be useful, although even the best like Windscribe are limited in terms of what they can do.
If you want to watch French TV shows and films, or Ligue 1 matches without buffering, low resolution, or running out of data, you’ll need a paid VPN.
🔄 Recent Updates
We’ve revised our testing methodology, added a new section on why you need a VPN in France, and included two new VPN recommendations: NordVPN and Proton VPN.
Why Use a VPN for France
Visiting France without a VPN leaves you with no way to access your streaming services, banking apps, or other geo-restricted platforms, from back home.
CNIL, France’s data protection authority, recommends a VPN on public WiFi.
We’ve confirmed all of these reasons in greater detail below:
1. Watch Streaming Services from Anywhere
If you’re in France, you’re restricted to its local streaming services and content libraries. This means no Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Paramount+, or international versions of Netflix and DAZN.
France also comes with a unique blocker: the “chronologie des médias“. This is a legally-mandated window imposed between a movie’s theatrical release and its availability on streaming platforms.
For Netflix it’s 15 months, other paid platforms it’s 17 months, and free-to-air broadcasters (e.g. TF1 and France TV) wait 22 months.
Compared to a 30-45 day wait for streamers in the UK and US, you’re having to wait over a year for the same content with the same subscription.
Using a top-rated VPN allows you to seamlessly change your online location and stream content from other countries.
This goes both ways: you can also use a VPN if you’re outside of France and need a French IP address. A VPN can unblock geo-restrictions on French platforms like TF1+, France TV, and Canal+.
2. Stay Secure on Public WiFi
France has one of the highest densities of public WiFi networks in Europe. These are often open networks, requiring no authentication to start using.
This comes with real risks: research from Kaspersky found that 25% of Paris networks are unsafe and just 6% use the WPA3 security protocol.
Risks can include third-parties intercepting your traffic, which may contain sensitive information like passwords and bank details.
To stay secure on public WiFi, you should connect to a reputable VPN and only disconnect once you’re on a trusted network.
All of our recommended VPNs for France use best-in-class encryption methods to protect your personal data.
3. Connect to Banking Apps
Digital services that handle sensitive data (like online banking) often flag foreign IP addresses as suspicious. This includes payment platforms like PayPal and Venmo.
Even digital banking apps designed for travel, such as Wise and Revolut, may flag a new session as suspicious.
You can use a VPN to securely connect to your home country, from your physical location in France, and continue using your bank as normal.
VPN Comparison Table
The table below compares each VPN recommendation for France based on number of servers in France, ability to unblock geo-restricted French streaming services, and price.
ExpressVPN is our go-to for France, especially if streaming is your priority.
Its vast server network delivers fast speeds and unblocks streaming services from around the world, including US Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and HBO Max.
Its apps are so user-friendly and perfect for a ‘set-and-forget‘ experience while travelling. We especially loved its mobile apps, which encrypted our data on public WiFi and cellular networks.
ExpressVPN also operates servers in three French cities: Marseille, Paris, and Strasbourg. All of which easily bypass geo-restrictions on platforms like France TV, Netflix France, M6+, TF1, and more.

Most Reliable Choice for Streaming
ExpressVPN is without doubt the best choice for streaming in France.
Using it grants access to content catalogs from around the world including 18 different Netflix regions.
Even harder-to-unblock platforms, like BBC iPlayer and Paramount+, worked on the first time of asking.
We never noticed our stream buffering or suddenly dropping to a lower video quality either, which we put down to its fast speeds.
Our testing also revealed that ExpressVPN works with every major French streamer:
The geo-blocked streaming platforms we accessed from outside France include:
Arte
Canal+ & MyCanal
France TV (france.tv)
Gulli
M6+
Molotov
Netflix France
TF1
TV5Monde
ExpressVPN is a great solution for watching French sports, too. You can use it to stream the Tour de France and the French Open on France.TV, or to bypass Prime Video’s VPN blocks to stream Ligue 1 matches.
We used ExpressVPN to watch French movies like ‘Plein soleil’ on France TV.
Servers in 3 French Cities
ExpressVPN has servers in Marseille, Paris, and Strasbourg, giving you the option to get an IP address from the Northern, Southern, and Eastern parts of France.
The ExpressVPN app also displays a server location in Alsace, which we found is also located in Strasbourg.
The VPN’s large pool of French IP addresses allows it to deliver fast and stable connections at all times, even during times of peak internet traffic.
Compatible with the Widest Range of Devices
Another stand-out aspect of ExpressVPN is its compatibility with a very wide selection of devices.
In fact, you can use ExpressVPN’s well-designed apps on Fire TV, Android TV and Apple TV to stream geo-restricted French content on devices beyond your computer and phone.
ExpressVPN is also one of extremely few VPNs with a router app. The app is very intuitive and allows you to use the VPN on devices that don’t support native VPN apps, such as games consoles.
You can also make use of the VPN’s browser extensions on Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, although they require the full app to run at the same time.

While it’s a close-run race, NordVPN is our next-best VPN for France.
It matches ExpressVPN in almost every aspect, but it logs your connection timestamps for 15 minutes after you disconnect and it works with marginally fewer streaming services.
Beyond these small margins, NordVPN is still a very strong choice and unblocks streaming services from around the globe. We found it particularly effective with UK streamers, such as BBC iPlayer, ITVX, and Channel 4.
It also includes security measures like auto-connect to keep you safe on French public WiFi, and advanced features like Meshnet and dedicated IP to securely access your home IP address.
If you need a French IP address, NordVPN supports server locations with hundreds of endpoints across France.
NordVPN unblocks almost every streaming service we test.
One of the Largest Server Networks
NordVPN has one of the largest server networks available, making it an excellent choice for accessing geo-blocked content.
You can get IP addresses from 127 countries, which includes servers for all 50 US States.
We made the most of this in France, as we used it to connect back to our home country and securely access our banking app.
NordVPN’s vast server network extends to France itself, with 300+ French IP addresses across Bordeaux, Marseille, Paris, and Strasbourg.
Advanced Features for Holidaymakers
NordVPN includes an auto-connect feature that connects you to the VPN as soon as you launch its app.
This is absolutely essential in France, given its track record of unsafe public WiFi hotspots. You can also customize this feature to only target WiFi, if you want to use your cellular network normally.
You can also use NordVPN’s Meshnet feature to connect to your home IP address for free. The only requirement is that you connect to a device that’s also running NordVPN.
This is really useful if you want to stream Netflix from France, as it lets you connect to your Netflix Household and avoid being shut out of your account.
Alternatively, you can purchase a dedicated IP from NordVPN to avoid needing a second device running the VPN. However, this costs an extra fee and is only available in select locations.
Optimized for International Streaming
NordVPN performed second-best in our streaming tests. Using it, you can unblock content from geo-restricted streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime Video.
In particular, we noticed that NordVPN was most consistent with UK distributors. It easily bypassed BBC iPlayer’s geo-blocks and allowed us to stream Match of the Day in full HD.
We also tested NordVPN with popular French streaming platforms and found it had a 100% success rate.
The geo-blocked streaming platforms we accessed from outside France include:
Arte
Canal+ & MyCanal
France TV (france.tv)
Gulli
M6+
Molotov
Netflix France
TF1
TV5Monde
In general, we never noticed any buffering or sudden drops in video quality while using NordVPN. We put this down to its fast international download speeds, with an average speed loss of just 14%.
We recommend using Proton VPN in France if privacy is your main priority.
It operates a genuine ‘no-logs’ policy, which means the VPN doesn’t store any data about you, including which websites you access.
This is underpinned by open-source apps (for increased transparency) and former CERN scientists developing its software.
While undoubtedly secure, it comes with the trade-off of a weaker streaming performance versus other top VPNs. This feels particularly disappointing, given Proton VPN’s large server network that spans 145 countries.
That said, it still unblocks some major streaming services like US Netflix and BBC iPlayer. You can also use it to get a French IP address and stream content from Arte TV, France TV, and Canal+.
You can use Proton VPN to stream France TV from anywhere.
Most Private & Secure Option for France
Proton VPN doesn’t log your IP address, the websites you visit, or your physical location. This makes it a ‘no-logs’ VPN, which was proven during a real-world court case.
It’s also developed by Proton, a Swiss software company that’s known for its highly-secure and privacy-focused products.
This is great if you’re in France, as it prevents major ISPs like Orange and Bouygues Telecom from monitoring your internet traffic.
Proton VPN also uses ChaCha20 encryption to secure your data. This is essential for protecting your connection while using public WiFi networks in large cities like Paris and Marseille.
One downside though, is the absence of a trusted network feature to ensure your VPN only connects on public hotspots (and disconnects for your home WiFi).
This is a significant quality-of-life feature that would make it far easier to use Proton VPN while travelling.
Fewer Streaming Options than Competitors
While testing from France, Proton VPN’s IP addresses were detected by streaming services more frequently than those of ExpressVPN, NordVPN, or CyberGhost.
Even so, it remains a solid streaming VPN. We unblocked 6 Netflix libraries (including France and the US), along with Hulu, Disney+ (US), HBO Max (US), and BBC iPlayer.
The main omissions were ITVX, Peacock, JioHotstar, and all DAZN libraries except for Canada. We also noticed some occasional buffering and graininess, particularly on live broadcasts.
Thankfully, Proton VPN is far more consistent with French streaming services. Aside from Ligue 1+ on DAZN, it unblocked every popular French platform including France TV and Canal+.
Industry-Leading Server Coverage
Proton VPN lets you connect servers in 145 countries, one of the highest totals available.
As such, you’re near-guaranteed to have a server in or near the location you need to connect to.
If you need more granular control over your VPN server location, there’s also city-level options in 15 countries.
Proton VPN provides 678 individual servers in France, the second-highest of our recommended VPNs. This is backed by our experience of using Proton VPN, since we’ve never experienced congested speeds or high ping on its France servers.
That said, we are disappointed to see its servers limited to just Paris and Marseille.

While not as high-performing as the other VPNs on this list, CyberGhost is a great option for France if you’re on a budget.
Despite a much cheaper monthly cost of only $1.75 on a two-year subscription, CyberGhost actually provides the highest number of France servers: 938 IPs across Paris, Strasbourg, and Marseille.
If you’re only planning a short-haul trip to France, then you can also take advantage of CyberGhost’s 24-hour free trial on PC (no card details needed), or its 3-day and 7-day free trials on Android and iOS respectively.
Signing up to the 6-month or two-year subscription qualifies you for a full refund if you request within 45 days, in case you need the VPN for longer.
You do pay for what you get, though. CyberGhost can’t unblock as many streaming services or match the speeds of our other recommended VPNs.
We used CyberGhost to unblock Canal+.
Unblocks US Netflix, BBC iPlayer, France TV & More
CyberGhost provides streaming servers for specific platforms like Canal+ and NBC. In general, these work as intended, although we’d prefer if all servers were optimized by default.
Using CyberGhost’s servers, we unblocked 10 Netflix libraries, including the US, UK, and France. This is a great result, but it can’t match the totals of ExpressVPN and NordVPN.
CyberGhost has optimized servers for the major French platforms.
This gulf in quality is also reflected in CyberGhost working with 82% of French streaming services, compared to 100% with ExpressVPN.
The two notable platforms we couldn’t access from outside France were TF1 and M6+.
CyberGhost still works with the following French channels:
Arte
Canal+ & MyCanal
France TV (france.tv)
Gulli
Molotov
Netflix France
TV5Monde
Huge Server Pool in France but Slower than ExpressVPN
CyberGhost provides IP addresses from 100 countries. There are very few gaps in its coverage so you’re likely to have a server near your desired location.
Its server list supports city-level choice in 10 countries, including France. In fact, CyberGhost has invested into the largest French server network of any VPN: 938 servers in Marseille, Paris, and Strasbourg.
Frustratingly though, CyberGhost’s French servers are not available via its Chrome and Firefox browser extensions.
This is a shame since VPN extensions are an even quicker way to get a French IP address than using a VPN application.
Despite its impressive server coverage, CyberGhost noticeably slows down your internet speed on long-distance connections.
Across every international location we connected to, CyberGhost decreased our download speed by 19% on average.
While not a terrible result, it’s a larger overhead than ExpressVPN’s 15%.
A Budget-Friendly VPN with Many Free Trial Options
CyberGhost is just over half the price of ExpressVPN, costing only $1.75 per month on a two-year plan.
For the level of performance on offer, this represents great value for your money.
There are also several CyberGhost free trials available for you to test the service for free before committing.
You can get a one-day free trial on Windows and macOS, a seven-day one via the Apple App Store, and a three-day one through the Google Play Store.
On top of this, the company offers a very long and rare 45-day money-back guarantee, which it has always honored in our experience.
Windscribe offers what we consider to be the best free VPN for France. Unlike most free VPNs we’ve tested, it’s very secure to use and offers access to two servers in France, which isn’t common.
These free servers, based in Paris, unblocked 90% of French streaming services. It also provides free servers in the UK and the US, which work with popular platforms like BBC iPlayer and Hulu.
But, you’ll only get 10GB of free data per month (roughly four hours of HD streaming).
Windscribe unblocks France TV on both its free VPN app and browser extension.
One of the Best Free VPNs for Streaming
Windscribe is head and shoulders above most free VPNs for streaming. It can unblock 5 Netflix libraries (France, Germany, Romania, Switzerland, and the UK), along with Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, and more.
Windscribe was also the best-performing free VPN in our France streaming tests. It unblocked 90% of streaming services, via its apps and its browser extensions.
We streamed the following French streaming services without major issues:
Arte
Canal+ & MyCanal
France TV (france.tv)
Gulli
M6+
Molotov
Netflix France
TF1
TV5Monde
Sadly, we did experience some blurriness while streaming. It wasn’t constant, but it was annoying enough to mention.
We were surprised by this picture degradation, considering Windscribe’s free VPN speed loss of 13% (connecting to foreign server locations) was even better than ExpressVPN’s.
Rare Free Servers Available in France
Windscribe currently has 2 free servers in Paris, which are available via the VPN app and Windscribe’s browser proxy extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge.
Considering most free VPNs don’t have French servers at all, this is very good. However, it’s far behind the number of server options on offer from paid VPN services like ExpressVPN and CyberGhost.
We connected to Windscribe’s free Paris server.
Compatible with Many Popular Devices
Unlike so many free VPNs, Windscribe has released intuitive apps covering all major platforms, including Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Fire TV, Apple TV, and Android TV.
You can get a French IP address as long as you have a VPN with servers in France.
Instructions: How to Get a French IP Address
Subscribe to a VPN with servers in France. We recommend ExpressVPN or CyberGhost.
Download the VPN and install it on your device.
Launch the application and log in with your account details.
Open the VPN’s server menu and select a location in France. The VPN will establish a connection to its France server, assigning you a French IP address.
Alternatively, watch our short video tutorial below:
We got a French IP address in seconds by connecting to one of ExpressVPN’s Paris servers.
How to Watch French TV & Netflix France from Abroad
As we’ve already explained, you can use a VPN to change your location, get a French IP address, and watch French TV from outside the country.
The process is very simple, as shown in our brief tutorial video below, in which we used ExpressVPN to get a French IP address and stream a geo-blocked show on France 2:
We used ExpressVPN to instantly unblock France 2 on france.tv.
Using the method outlined above, you can also use a VPN to watch France 2, France 3, France 4, and France 5 on France TV (france.tv).
To inform our recommendations, we tested 60 VPNs specifically for use in France.
While many performed to a high-standard, they often fell short in one or two key areas.
Below are popular VPNs we’ve had to reluctantly exclude from our shortlist, alongside our reasons why:
Surfshark
Surfshark is one of the best VPNs available and only narrowly misses out on our list.
While it’s well-priced, secure, and great for streaming, it only supports 76 French servers.
This simply isn’t enough servers, especially spread across 3 cities, and our download speeds connecting into France suffered as a result.
As shown on its website, Surfshark has very few servers in France.
IPVanish
IPVanish is one of the fastest VPNs we’ve tested. However, it struggles to unblock as many international streaming services as ExpressVPN and CyberGhost. Unfortunately, this is the same for French streaming services.
In our streaming tests, IPVanish failed to unblock TV5Monde.
Private Internet Access
PIA has a huge server network, which is usually ideal for connecting into many countries. For instance, it’s a great VPN for getting a US IP address.
Sadly, it’s not great for connecting into France, since it only unblocked 45% of French streaming platforms we tested it with, with only one French server location on offer.
PIA doesn’t unblock France.tv and other French streaming services.
PrivadoVPN (Free Version)
PrivadoVPN is usually a good free VPN option, but it fails to access important French TV channels like TV5Monde and M6+. Windscribe is a much better free VPN for France.
PrivadoVPN’s free service often fails to stream French TV channels.
Proton VPN (Free Version)
Proton VPN is the only free VPN without a data limit, but it doesn’t offer access to a French server location. Nor does it allow you to select your own server location, instead it automatically connects you to the “fastest” available free server.
Proton VPN offers free servers in 10 countries, including the US, Canada, and Switzerland.
How We Test VPNs for France
To determine the best VPNs for France, we developed six key testing criteria and assigned each a percentage weight.
In the table below, you can see how our top-rated France VPNs performed in each category as well as their overall rating for France.
You can read a more detailed breakdown of our testing categories below, including why we test for them, how we test for them, and the optimal result:
1. Global Servers (30%)
Test Conducted: We went through each VPN’s server list and noted down the total number of locations, as well as any city-level options.
Why It’s Important: A large server network increases the number of countries you can connect to and streaming services you can unblock. It also minimizes speed loss by ensuring you have a server nearby.
Optimal Results: Servers in over 100 countries, including city-level choice in popular locations like the US, the UK, and Canada.
2. France Servers (25%)
Test Conducted: Counted the number of France servers in each VPN’s server network. We also counted the number of city-level servers in France. Lastly, we used an IP address tool to check the server was indeed in that location.
Why It’s Important: You need a French IP address to access French TV channels and websites.
Optimal Results: The VPN has hundreds of servers in multiple French cities.
3. Speed (15%)
Test Conducted: Performed manual speed tests with each VPN and recorded download speed, upload speed, and ping times when connecting into France.
Why It’s Important: Fast speeds enable you to stream video smoothly and browse the internet seamlessly.
Optimal Result: Less than 15% drop in download speed when connecting to VPN servers in France from neighboring countries.
4. Streaming (10%)
Test Conducted: We tested each VPN with the most popular streaming services from around the world and in France. We also recorded any buffering or noticeable drops in video quality.
Why It’s Important: It allows you to watch content you otherwise wouldn’t have had access to.
Optimal Results: Consistent access to popular international platforms (like US Netflix, HBO Max, and BBC iPlayer) and French services (like Arte, Canal+, and France TV).
5. Privacy (10%)
Test Conducted: Analyzed each VPN’s privacy policy and record what data was logged and for how long. The best VPNs do not log any identifying data, like your IP address, timestamps, or DNS requests.
Why It’s Important: Unsafe VPNs store excessive amounts of personal data, which can be used to identify individual users.
Optimal Result: No-logs policy evidenced by a court case or server seizure. Diskless servers and regular independent audits.
6. Security (10%)
Test Conducted: Tested each VPN’s encryption and kill switch for data leaks. Noted whether VPNs offer safe protocols like WireGuard and OpenVPN, as well as extra security features like ad blockers, split tunneling, and double VPN.
Why It’s Important: IP and HTML5 geolocation leaks can prevent you from unblocking French content abroad. Strong VPN encryption ensures your browsing activity and personal details are kept private.
Optimal Result: Zero data leaks, an effective kill switch, strong encryption, and safe protocols.
Data Cap Penalty
Free VPNs can be useful, but their usefulness is limited by data allowances.
To account for this, we attach penalties to free VPNs that enforce data caps, with the harshest penalties reserved for the most restrictive data caps. Here’s a breakdown:
10GB per month: -20% to the overall rating
500MB per day: -25% to the overall rating
5GB per month: -30% to the overall rating
1GB per month: -35% to the overall rating
200MB per day: -40% to the overall rating
500MB per month: -50% to the overall rating
Windscribe Free has a 10GB per month data cap, so we’ve taken 20% off its overall France rating to reflect its limited capabilities.

What’s the Best VPN for iPhone in France?
ExpressVPN is the best VPN to use on iPhone in France due to its user-friendly iOS app.
You can choose between ChaCha20 or AES-256 to encrypt your iPhone’s connection, and Lightway ensures your download speeds remain as fast as possible.
Thanks to its iOS integration, you can also use Siri or the home screen widget to quickly connect to a VPN server.
