Surfshark is the best VPN for Disney+, unblocking it on every server I tested. ExpressVPN is the most user-friendly pick, and NordVPN the fastest. PrivadoVPN is the best free option, good for about four hours of HD streaming a month.
Disney+ is available in most countries, but not all, and every region has its own unique set of on-demand and live content.
Disney+ doesn’t want you to bypass these regional restrictions, though, and it restricts access by looking up the location of your IP address.
You can fix this by using a streaming VPN which tricks Disney+ into showing you local content, like Hulu in the UK and Canada, and ESPN in Mexico and Australia.
With any of my picks below, you’ll be able to switch freely between Disney+ regions, and stream Hulu and ESPN content without tripping the service’s VPN blocks.
If you already have a VPN but it’s not working with Disney+, try one of my solutions to fix it.
I’ve also written a separate guide for using a VPN with India’s JioHotstar (formerly Disney+ Hotstar), which carries a lot of unique content you won’t find on disneyplus.com.

The Best Disney+ VPNs Compared
Sadly, most VPNs don’t work with Disney+. When I tested 59 VPNs with the streaming service, I found that many triggered error codes and connection issues.
The VPNs I recommend bypassed Disney Plus’ geo-restrictions consistently, avoiding error codes and delivering a smooth streaming experience every time.
Use the table below to compare them based on their test ratings, free trial options, and cheapest pricing plan:
Surfshark has been my top choice for Disney+ since the streaming service launched. What puts the VPN above all the rest is the fact that it unblocks Disney+ on every server I tested.
I easily bypassed the content platform’s geo-blocks at every attempt, unlocking FX and ABC dramas in the UK or Mexico’s ESPN live feeds without issues.
ExpressVPN works more smoothly on Smart TVs and is faster over longer distances, but Surfshark’s is just unbeatably consistent in unblocking the most popular Disney+ regions. That’s why it’s my top pick.
Surfshark worked flawlessly on every popular Disney+ region I tried.
Solid Speeds for High Quality Streaming
Whichever Surfshark server location I connected to, the local Disney+ catalogs and videos loaded quickly and streamed in high resolution.
I was very impressed to see how well the VPN unlocked regions around the world, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the UK, all with the same ease.
Everything I watched was buffer-free and with none of the lag or low resolution that I encountered with several slower VPNs, like CyberGhost.
I ran Surfshark through our speed test tool, as I do with all VPNs, and found that it only slowed down my internet speed by 17%.
ExpressVPN and NordVPN’s impact was even lower than that but Surfshark was still fast enough for high-quality streaming, without any frustrating buffering or blurriness.
User-Friendly Apps & Unlimited Device Policy
Unlike ExpressVPN, Surfshark doesn’t impose a device limit, which means you can use the VPN on as many devices as you want using the same account details.
Surfshark has apps for all the major streaming devices, including Apple TV, Android TV, and Fire TV Stick, which meant I never encountered Error Code 83 for device compatibility issues during my testing.
I used Surfshark on a Chromecast with Google TV.
Alongside those are user-friendly apps for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. In testing, finding and connecting to a server location only took me a moment.
Their apps are busier than ExpressVPN’s, and servers took a few extra seconds to connect, but otherwise I had no problems changing my IP address.
One drawback is that Surfshark no longer offers a Smart DNS proxy, which makes it much harder to use on Smart TVs and game consoles.
Very Affordable for First-time Customers
At its cheapest, Surfshark costs only $2.49/mo over 27 months compared to ExpressVPN’s $2.99/mo over 28 months. That’s incredible value for a first-time customer.

Like Surfshark, ExpressVPN worked with all available Disney+ regions I tried, including live sport.
It wasn’t 100% consistent around the world, with the odd server being blocked, but overall I enjoyed fast and unrestricted access.
What stands out about ExpressVPN is just how easy it is to use, even on TV streaming devices and gaming consoles. Its apps are as close as you can get to “plug-and-play” even when setting up on a router!
ExpressVPN accessed free ESPN content via Disney+ Mexico.
Excellent Apps for Routers & Streaming Devices
No matter which device I streamed Disney+ on, ExpressVPN had either an effective, user-friendly app for it, or a simpler workaround compared to other VPN services.
All its apps, including those for Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, and Android TV, share the same design and UX which makes switching between seamless.
No other VPN connects to servers as quickly. It’s by far the fastest VPN at changing your IP address, whether it’s on desktop, mobile, or on your TV.
It’s also the only VPN to offer its own router, the Aircove. It comes with its own dedicated app that lets you assign different IP locations to as many devices on your WiFi as you want.
Aircove’s not cheap but if you want every device in the house on a VPN, your Roku TV or a games console especially, that app is a real game-changer.
Fast Speeds & Excellent Customer Support
Combined with an unmatched user experience is the fact that ExpressVPN is one of the fastest VPNs on the market today.
Connecting to dozens of countries where Disney+ is available, my internet speed dipped by only 15%, which is even better than Surfshark.
On the rare occasion an ExpressVPN server was blocked by Disney+, I was able to ask the company’s excellent 24/7 live chat customer support team for help.
Every support agent I’ve interacted with, over many years, has always been well prepared and knowledgeable of which servers will work with Disney+.
Similar Price to Surfshark
On a multi-year plan, ExpressVPN is very competitively priced. At $2.99/mo over 28 months, ExpressVPN costs around the same as Surfshark, which is $2.49/mo over 27 months on its longest-term plan.
The price difference is negligible, so if you prefer a more user-friendly and compatible VPN, ExpressVPN is absolutely worth it.
Still undecided? Sign up to ExpressVPN’s 3-day free trial through your mobile app store, then use the same login details on its other apps.
The best and most elegant solution I’ve seen for getting round the Disney+ password-sharing ban is NordVPN’s Meshnet.
It’s a free feature in NordVPN’s app that lets you create a private, secure network between devices, wherever they are in the world.
I got a residential IP address for free using Meshnet.
In plain terms, it’s a remote access tool that routes one device’s traffic through another, so that you’re using the second device’s IP address.
And the best thing is that you don’t even need a NordVPN subscription to use Meshnet!
If you want to know more, I’ve added a step-by-step explainer of how Meshnet works later in the guide.
Less User-friendly than ExpressVPN
One area where NordVPN could do better is the design and UX of its desktop apps.
The software is far from “broken”, but pushing extras like Threat Protection and Dark Web Monitor onto the home screen feels like an upsell rather than a genuinely helpful design.
I found them slightly distracting when all I wanted to do was change my IP location.
The good news is that in the latest desktop software version, both tools have moved below the core VPN controls, which has noticeably improved UX.
Then there is the “Pause” button, sigh. This questionable design choice simply adds an unnecessary step to disconnecting your VPN.
It makes the basic act of disconnecting from the VPN more of a chore than it should be, especially for new users.
Right now, PrivadoVPN is my favorite free VPN for unblocking Disney+. It performed exceptionally well for a free service, with excellent international speeds and consistent access to Disney+.
Obviously, it can’t compete against the likes of Surfshark and ExpressVPN, due to its tiny server network and 10GB monthly bandwidth limit.
That said, PrivadoVPN is a solid solution for occasionally watching a show or a movie.
PrivadoVPN’s free servers in the UK, US and Canada work with Disney+.
Surprisingly Reliable Access to Disney+
PrivadoVPN’s free server network is limited to 11 countries, so you can only access Disney+ libraries in a handful of regions.
The free VPN servers in the UK and in Canada stood out for unblocking local content relatively smoothly, including Hulu content like Scrubs and Grey’s Anatomy.
Sadly, Canada, the UK, and the US are the only regions PrivadoVPN works with at the moment. All the other free server locations failed to bypass Disney’s geo-restrictions.
If you want to access other international catalogs for free, use either ExpressVPN’s or Surfshark’s free trial.
Restrictive 10GB Monthly Data Limit
Like most safe free VPNs, PrivadoVPN’s main drawback is the 10GB monthly data cap, which gave me roughly 4 hours of HD streaming.
This is enough for occasional VPN use but you’ll have to either upgrade to a paid plan (or a better paid service) to stream a lot more geo-restricted content each month.
You also have to refresh the data allowance via your online account manually, which is an irritating faff that no other free VPN makes you do.
Disappointing Device Support
PrivadoVPN’s free service is compatible with computers, smartphones and TV streaming devices via its apps for Android TV, Apple TV, and Firestick.
However, it falls short by not providing a Smart DNS proxy, and limiting browser extensions and router configuration to paid subscriptions only.
These restrictions severely reduce the VPN’s compatibility with devices such as Chromecast, Roku, and gaming consoles.
My Disney+ picks come from a mix of hands-on use on my own travels and a testing methodology my VPN team built specifically for this streaming service.
I’ve felt first-hand just how stubborn Disney+ is to unblock from abroad, which is why unblocking ability carries so much more weight than anything else.
Alongside it, I weigh how much a VPN slows your connection, how broad its server network is, and how many of your devices it supports.
Here’s how I tested 59 VPNs in each of the four categories, and how much each category counts toward a VPN’s overall Disney+ rating.
1. Unblocks Disney+ (50%)
Test Conducted: I signed into Disney+ on each of the 59 VPNs and tried to stream both on-demand and live titles from a spread of regions, repeating any failed attempt on a second server before ruling the VPN out.
Why It’s Important: If a VPN can’t bypass Disney+’s geo-blocks, none of its other qualities matter.
Optimal Result: A VPN that unblocks and streams Disney+ content 100% of the time.
2. Speed (25%)
Test Conducted: My testing team measures each VPN’s average download-speed loss using our own speed testing tool across servers in eight countries, repeating the runs to smooth out any anomalies.
Why It’s Important: Fast speeds allow you to stream Disney+ content in maximum resolution with no buffering time, for the best possible viewing experience.
Optimal Result: A speed loss no greater than 10% across a VPN’s entire server network.
3. Server Locations (15%)
Test Conducted: I work through each app’s server list, verifying that the IP addresses actually resolve to the countries advertised.
Why It’s Important: A wide server network allows you to bypass more geo-blocks and achieve faster speeds from connecting to nearby locations.
Optimal Result: A verified network of more than 1,000 servers in at least 100 countries, offering multiple city-level connection points in key regions.
4. Device Compatibility (10%)
Test Conducted: I go through each VPN’s app lineup, Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Android TV, and Smart DNS included, and assess how easily each one installs and runs for Disney+.
Why It’s Important: The more devices a VPN supports, the more options you have to stream Disney+.
Optimal Result: Apps for every major streaming device as well as a Smart DNS feature and a router application.
How to Change Disney+ Region with a VPN
Changing Disney+ region with a VPN to access region-locked content titles (or additional dubbing options) is straightforward.
Since all regions use the same Disney+ website and app, switching from one library to another is simpler than on other platforms that use separate apps for each territory, like Paramount+.
I changed my Disney+ region using a recommended VPN.
Here are my instructions on how to change your Disney+ region on the most popular devices. If you encounter issues, jump to my troubleshooting section.
JustWatch is a very useful resource to find content “hidden” in other countries’ catalogs.
Computer (PC & Mac)
Accessing a foreign Disney+ catalog from your computer is one of the simplest methods. Unlike platforms like Prime Video, Disney+ shows you content based on your IP location, rather than your billing country.
One important tip: log into Disney+ before connecting to a VPN server. Its VPN checks are most aggressive during sign-in, so logging in on your normal residential connection makes it much easier to avoid Error 83.
Instructions: How to Use a VPN with Disney+ on PC/Mac
Choose a VPN that works with Disney+. We recommend Surfshark, which worked great and offers a 7-day free trial on desktop.
Set up the software. Download the app from the provider’s site and follow the on-screen prompts.
Activate the Kill Switch. Enable it from the app’s settings to protect your real location from being exposed if the VPN connection cuts out. Don’t connect to a VPN server just yet.
Choose the right streaming browser: Not all browsers handle high-resolution video content equally.
On Windows: Use Microsoft Edge for 4K playback. Chrome often defaults to 1080p (Full HD).
On Mac: Safari is the best choice for Ultra HD / 4K streaming.
Disable location tracking to prevent location mismatches.
Log into your Disney+: log into your account as normal using your standard connection.
Connect to a VPN server: pick a server in your chosen virtual country from the app’s server list. Once connected, your IP location will change.
Verify the region change: If you still see your local home screen, wipe your browser’s cookies and cache.
Start watching.
Mobile (iOS & Android)
Unblocking geo-restricted Disney+ content on smartphones and tablets is almost as easy as on computers, with a few minor differences.
There is only one Disney+ app available and it’s available in all local app stores the platform operates in. This means that through one login you can access other countries’ content by changing your IP address.
Instructions: How to Use a VPN with Disney+ on iOS/Android
Get a VPN optimized for Disney+. You can install Surfshark directly from the App Store and Google Play Store.
Install the VPN app.
Disable Location Services (GPS). To prevent a location mismatch, go to your phone’s Settings > Disney+ > Location and select “Never” or “Don’t Allow.”
Sign into your Disney+ app.
Force-close Disney+. Swipe the Disney+ app away from your “Recent Apps” list to ensure it clears your old location data.
Return to your VPN app.
Connect to a VPN server. Select a server in the region you want to access (e.g. Mexico or the UK).
Relaunch Disney+ and stream.
Android TV, Fire TV & Apple TV
It’s a similar story on Android TV, Fire TV, and Apple TV, since the Disney+ app on these devices is the same in every country.
Instructions: How to Use a VPN on Android TV, Fire TV & Apple TV
Choose a VPN with an app for your device. On streaming sticks and boxes, we enjoyed using ExpressVPN due to its well-designed apps.
Install the VPN from your device’s app store. You’ll have to first sign up via desktop or mobile.
Launch the VPN app and sign in. Complete any on-screen verification steps.
Open the Disney+ app and log in.
Fully close the Disney+ app and clear caches. You’ll have to go into your device’s app manager to do this.
Open your VPN app and connect to a server in the country you want to access.
Launch the Disney+ app once again. You should now see content titles from your VPN location.
Roku
Roku sticks don’t support VPN apps, so the simplest workaround is to set up your VPN at the router level. This changes your Roku TV’s IP location and, with it, your Disney+ region.
Because of its dedicated VPN router app, I recommend ExpressVPN here. Its own Aircove router is genuinely plug-and-play, where other VPNs usually mean a fiddlier, manual setup on your own hardware.
How to Use a VPN with Disney+ on Roku
Set up an ExpressVPN Aircove router. Plug it in, then activate at expressvpnrouter.com.
Pick your region in the dashboard. Every device on the network shares that IP location.
Connect your Roku to the Aircove’s WiFi network.
Open Disney+ on your Roku. Change location in the dashboard to switch regions.
If you’d rather not buy a new router, you have two options.
ExpressVPN may have officially ended its app support for third-party routers, but for now at least, you can still connect and use the fantastic dedicated app as normal, as long as you’re on the latest firmware. That’s great news for those of us with a compatible router, though I’d proceed with caution, since it’s unclear whether they’ll keep receiving security updates.
The safer option is to manually configure ExpressVPN on a compatible model instead, using its setup guides (also available via the firmware link above). Just note that you’ll need a separate configuration file for each location you want to connect to.
Game Consoles
For gaming consoles like PlayStation and Xbox, you have two main ways to change your Disney+ region: using a VPN via your router, or a Smart DNS proxy.
A Smart DNS proxy is easier to set up on a console, but it doesn’t encrypt your data or hide your IP address. VPN software is vastly more secure, versatile, and is the better choice overall.
ExpressVPN and NordVPN offer Smart DNS proxies, but they only unblock American and British content platforms.
For access to many more Disney+ regions, using a VPN through your router is the way to go, with ExpressVPN being the least complex option.
At launch, Disney claimed its streaming service was “VPN proof”. It isn’t, but Disney+ is good at detecting and blocking many VPN IP addresses.
If the streaming service detects your VPN connection, you’ll see this message (also known as error code 73): Disney+ is only available in certain regions. Depending on where you are located, you may not be able to access Disney+.
Disney+ tries to detect and block VPNs.
If you’re struggling to stream Disney+ on a VPN, follow the steps I’ve listed below to fix the issue:
1. Change VPN Server
If you’re already using a good VPN for Disney+, changing server is a quick and easy way to resolve a Disney+ connection issue.
Disney+ tries to detect and ban VPN connections, so switching servers to an undetected one can fix the problem.
You won’t know which server will work, so there may be some trial and error involved.
The best VPNs get around streaming region blocks by offering thousands of updated servers that are designed to avoid detection. Surfshark, for example, manages to avoid Disney Plus blocks on all of its servers.
2. Clear Browser Cookies and Cache
Websites can collect location data through cookies and cached files. If you’re seeing an error code when using Disney Plus, like Error Code 22 or 31, it could be the service has detected your real geolocation based on these web identifiers.
Connecting to a VPN server doesn’t remove cookies. You have to delete them from your browser.
How to clear your cache in Google Chrome:
Open Google Chrome. Click the three dot icon at the top-right of the window.
Select More Tools > Clear browsing data, then from the drop-down menu select All time.
Check Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files.
Tap Clear data.
Relaunch Google Chrome and head to the Disney+ website.
If you’re watching Disney Plus on Android or iOS you have to restart your mobile device to clear cookies and cache.
Your browser’s incognito mode also provides a private browsing window that removes most forms of online tracking, too.
3. Test for IP and DNS Leaks
Disney Plus won’t work if your VPN is leaking data.
Sometimes DNS requests and real IP addresses fall outside the encrypted VPN connection, revealing your true location and triggering Disney Plus Error Code 22 or 73.
This happens more with free VPNs. The best VPNs have leak protection built into their service.
If your VPN is leaking, check to see whether there are leak protection features in your VPN’s settings, and ask your VPN provider what can be done. Otherwise, I’d switch to another, safer VPN service.
4. Get a Dedicated IP
One of the reasons why some VPN servers get blocked is because Disney+ notices too many accounts using the same IP address.
Surfshark, ExpressVPN, and NordVPN all offer dedicated IPs, although they do cost extra.
Given that added cost, I’d only buy a dedicated IP if you’re only interested in reliable access to a single foreign content catalog.
5. Get a Better VPN
More often than not, your Disney+ trouble comes from using the wrong VPN since many VPNs don’t work with Disney+.
Some VPN companies don’t prioritize unblocking streaming services, while others lack the technology and resources to bypass aggressive geo-restrictions.
The most effective fix to unblock Disney+ is to use a VPN verified to work, with an excellent track record of smooth international access.
Popular Regional Content on Disney+
As you’ll have gathered by now, Disney+ content libraries can be pretty different around the world.
I’ve listed below a selection of popular movies, TV shows, and live channels available in foreign catalogs but not in the US.
It is all available with a standard Disney+ subscription, so no need for the Hulu add-on.
The main difference between English-speaking libraries is that the standard US catalog doesn’t contain most Hulu content, unless you subscribe to the Disney+ Bundle.
In countries like Canada and the UK, you don’t need to get the Bundle to access content like Hulu Originals, FX dramas, ABC productions, and the like.
I also found that some regions carry ESPN live streams and content as part of the standard subscription.
Latin America has the deepest integration of all. By using a VPN to switch to a Mexican IP location, you can actually watch La Liga and the FA Cup at no extra cost.
Similarly, an Australian IP address will allow you to watch out-of-market NHL games, NFL Monday Night Football, and the full NBA Playoffs (including the Finals).
How to Beat the Disney+ Password Sharing Ban
Disney now ties each account to a single “household,” which is broadly defined as devices that regularly connect from the same home network.
The platform enforces this by cross-referencing IP addresses with device ID profiling and GPS data to spot anomalies. It also analyzes viewing patterns to flag accounts logging in from geographically mismatched locations.
In most major markets, Disney offers a paid Extra Member add-on that lets a subscriber legitimately add one person outside their household.
For anyone who wants to share without paying for the add-on, NordVPN’s Meshnet is the cleanest workaround I’ve tested.
Watch the video below in which I briefly explain how Meshnet works:
VPNs That Didn't Make My List
Most VPNs struggle to beat Disney’s VPN and proxy detection, and plenty don’t work with the platform at all.
PIA failed to unblock Disney+ UK from abroad.
Here’s a few popular VPNs I can’t recommend for using with Disney+, and why:
CyberGhost
CyberGhost is an OK VPN for bypassing Disney+: it worked with several regions, including the US, UK, France, and Germany.
Its Smart DNS proxy is arguably the best offered by a VPN service, since it works with several international content platforms, not just US and UK ones.
My sticking point is streaming speed and consistency. On long distances in particular, CyberGhost is noticeably slower than my top picks, and my streams suffered from it.
IPVanish
IPVanish has improved a ton unblocking geo-restricted content, especially in English-speaking countries. In other regions, though, the VPN still runs hot and cold.
That’s the case with Disney+, where IPVanish worked pretty well in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, but hit a few roadblocks in Europe and Asia.
You also don’t get a free Smart DNS proxy included in your IPVanish subscription.
Private Internet Access
Private Internet Access (PIA) is generally a really good VPN, but when it comes to streaming it’s not always as reliable as I’d like.
One of the streaming services the VPN continues to struggle with to this day is Disney+. No matter what I tried, I just couldn’t access popular regions like Canada, France, Germany, and the UK.
Proton VPN
Like IPVanish, Proton VPN has stepped up its paid service’s streaming game significantly. It was a poor option in the past, but it’s become a contender for certain content platforms.
That mostly applies for popular English-language streaming services, not international ones. Trying to access geo-blocked titles in Brazil, Italy, or Mexico was a no-go.
Don’t even bother with Proton VPN’s free plan, since it won’t let you choose your own server location.
Windscribe
Windscribe’s free service came close to overtaking PrivadoVPN but lost out on one key aspect: speed. Windscribe is no slouch, but PrivadoVPN’s free VPN download speeds were noticeably faster.
I measured a speed reduction of only 8% compared to Windscribe’s 13%.
Windscribe’s paid service is good too, but once again it’s slower than the very best VPNs, its app interface is starting to look dated, and there’s no router app or Smart DNS on offer.
Data Cap Penalty
I apply a penalty to the VPN’s final overall rating for Disney+ based on its data cap:
Unlimited bandwidth: No deduction to the overall rating
10GB per month: -20% to the overall rating
500MB per day: -25% to the overall rating
5GB per month: -30% to the overall rating
1GB or 2GB per month: -35% to the overall rating
200MB per day: -40% to the overall rating
500MB per month: -50% to the overall rating
FAQs
How Many Titles Do the Most Popular Disney+ Regions Have?
Disney+ doesn’t carry the same content across its regional catalogs. Some libraries have hundreds fewer titles than the biggest ones.
The table below lists the approximate number of titles available in popular international Disney+ catalogs:

The British and Canadian libraries are the richest catalogs available, with over 3,400 titles each.
The same can’t be said about the American one. Because Hulu content isn’t included in the standard plan, it has only 2,250 titles.
N.B. The number of titles available in each country changes all the time. The figures quoted above were correct as of writing.
Can I Access My Home Disney+ Content When I'm Traveling?
If you travel abroad, Disney+ automatically detects it and shows you local content.
To get back to your home country’s content titles, you’ll need to use a VPN to get an IP address from home.
How Does Disney+ Know I'm Using a VPN?
Disney+, like many other streaming platforms, tracks in real-time the IP addresses using its service.
An automated system looks up these IP addresses against a database of known VPN server addresses, and blocks any matching IPs.
Typically, the more Disney+ customers use the same shared IP addresses, the more likely they’ll be detected and blocked.
Will Disney+ Ban Me for Using a VPN?
No, Disney+ won’t suspend and/or deactivate your account if you’re caught using a VPN. We’ve been testing numerous VPNs with Disney+ since 2019, and our original test account remains active.
Where Is Disney+ Available?
Disney+ has expanded significantly since launch and is now available in over 100 countries. However it remains unavailable in the locations below, where you’ll need a VPN to watch:
South America & Central America: Belize, French Guiana, Guyana.
